Introduction

Grammar is the set of rules and conventions that govern the structure and use of words in a language. It helps us communicate effectively and accurately. This practice sheet is designed to help you improve your understanding of grammar and become more confident in using it.

Parts of Speech

Grammar is built around the 8 parts of speech. These are:

  • Nouns
  • Pronouns
  • Adjectives
  • Verbs
  • Adverbs
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunctions
  • Interjections

For each part of speech, think of an example and write it down.

Sentence Structure

Sentences are made up of different parts, including a subject, verb, and object.

  • The subject is the person or thing that is doing something.
  • The verb is the action that is being done.
  • The object is the person or thing that is being acted upon.

For each of the following sentences, write down the subject, verb, and object.

  1. The cat chased the mouse. Subject: The cat Verb: chased Object: the mouse

  2. The girl ran quickly. Subject: The girl Verb: ran Object: quickly

  3. The teacher gave the students their assignments. Subject: The teacher Verb: gave Object: the students their assignments

Sentence Types

Sentences can be classified into four different types:

  • Declarative: A statement
  • Interrogative: A question
  • Imperative: A command
  • Exclamatory: An exclamation

For each of the following sentences, identify the type of sentence.

  1. What do you want to do? Interrogative

  2. Go to the store. Imperative

  3. She loves chocolate cake! Exclamatory

  4. The sky is blue. Declarative

Punctuation

Punctuation is used to help make the meaning of a sentence clear.

  • Periods (.) are used to end a declarative sentence.
  • Question marks (?) are used to end an interrogative sentence.
  • Exclamation marks (!) are used to end an exclamatory sentence.
  • Commas (,) are used to separate ideas or to join two independent clauses.

For each of the following sentences, identify the punctuation used.

  1. The dog barked loudly. Period

  2. Are you coming with us? Question mark

  3. Wow, that was amazing! Exclamation mark

  4. We went to the park, but it was too cold. Comma
