Pragmatics Practice Sheet
What is Pragmatics?
Pragmatics is the study of how we use language to communicate. It focuses on how the context of a conversation, the speaker's intentions, and the listener's understanding of the language affect the meaning of the words that are used.
Examples of Pragmatics
When you say I'm sorry
in response to someone bumping into you, the meaning of the phrase is different than if you said it in response to someone spilling a drink.
When you say I'm starving
to your friend, it has a different meaning than if you said it to a waiter in a restaurant.
When you say It's hot in here
to someone in a room, the meaning of the phrase is different than if you said it to someone outside in the sun.
